The Book of Tomorrow: A Review

Image
Cecelia Ahern's The Book of Tomorrow Logistics Title:  The Book of Tomorrow Author:  Cecelia Ahern Published:  January 1, 2009 Publishing Company:  Harper/Collins Page Count:  320 Summary via Goodreads Tamara Goodwin has everything she ever wanted and she never has to think about tomorrow. But suddenly her world is turned upside down and she has to leave her glamorous city life for a new one in the country. However, Tamara is soon lonely and longing to return home. Then a travelling library arrives in the village, bringing with it a mysterious leather-bound book locked with a gold clasp and padlock. What Tamara discovers within its pages takes her breath away and everything starts to change in the most unexpected of ways... My Thoughts This was, by far, my least favorite of Ahern's books.  Tamara is unlikable, spoiled, and a brat to boot.  The story is unbelievable (not because of the magical aspect, as is present in nearly all ...

Why I Love...the Anti-Hero

Image
Today's topic for Why I Love Wednesday is Favorite Heroes ...well, I'm taking this in a different way and declaring my love for the Anti-Hero.  Anti-Heroes are generally the underdog of the story or the "hero-in-hiding" and seeing them triumph in one way or another is always one of my favorite aspects in a story.  So, here's to the Anti-Heroes! My most loved anti-hero is, hands down, Severus Snape.  Many would argue that he is not worthy of being considered a hero, but I would beg to differ...heatedly.  He's loyal to a fault and completely constant in his treatment toward others.  These aspects alone garner him hero status in my book.  But if someone needs more convicing, simply look at how he sacrifices himself on countless occassions: with Draco, with Harry, with Dumbledore, and, ultimately, with his own life.  Here's your medal, Professor! Another hero who falls under the anti status would be Death from The Book Thief .  Death being consider...

Why I Love...Tear Jerkers

Image
I am not, by nature, an emotional person.  I don't cry when I get upset.  I don't cry when I get hurt.  Honestly, I don't cry...at least it's a rare occasion if I do.  In fact, several friends have described me as having a heart of stone because I never cry (jokingly, of course).  However, there are a few things that get me every time:  Selena , The Notebook (film version), The Family Stone and some other films.  But for the most part, I'm a stone wall.  Now that all changes when it comes to certain books.  There are a few books that I will cherish forever despite the fact that they make me cry.  For that reason, they belong in the Why I Love...Tear Jerkers category.  First, and foremost:  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows This was the only installation in the boy wizard series where I cried.  It's not that I wasn't upset about things that occurred in the previous books (Cedric's death, Sirius' death, Dumbledore's ...

Why I Love...Book Worlds

Image
Oh man.  How many times have I lost myself in an alternate reality via a good book?  Countless...honestly!  Nothing can beat being so immersed in a book and envisioning that atmosphere so completely that you feel as if you're an integral part of it.  For that reason alone this week's Why I Love deals with Book Worlds .  I've tried to branch out in my Why I Love responses so that they aren't redundant AND to show that I read a lot of different things.  However, absolutely nothing, I mean NOTHING, can top the world that JK Rowling created in the Harry Potter series.  For that reason alone my favorite book world is, hands down, without a doubt, Hogwarts and everything that goes with it! I've imagined walking down those very halls and experiencing everything that comes with being a student at Hogwarts.  From the moving staircases, the variety of professors, the forbidden floors, the ghosts, and so much more.  Being able to conjure up such an a...
