I is for...Kazuo Ishiguro

I'll admit that it was much more difficult to find an author to represent the letter I for today's entry, but I did it!  Today is about:  Kazuo Ishiguro.

Kazuo Ishiguro (1954-)
I haven't read much by Ishiguro, but what I have read has been fantastic.  If you're looking for a great contemporary fiction writer, look no further.  Having been recognized as a stand out British author and nominated multiple times for the Man Booker Prize, winning for The Remains of the Day in 1989, Ishiguro sets his novels in the identifiable past while allowing his characters to reveal their many flaws through first-person narratives.  This allows for the reader to really feel for the characters as people and not just figures in a novel.  One thing that might irk some readers is the penchant for Ishiguro to leave his novels unresolved.  However, this only adds to the "realness" he infuses throughout his works; life is never wrapped up in a nice, neat package, so why should the novels be any different.

*Recommendation:  Never Let Me Go

Who are some of your favorite I authors?

  1. I read some Ishiguro in school but for the life of me I can't remember which book it was! Yikes. I'd have to Google him and find out.

  2. I've only read one of his .... Never let me go. I was sceptical about reading it because at the time there was a lot of hype about it and everyone was recommending it and I was sure it wouldn't live up to all the fuss. Happy to say I was wrong and I really enjoyed it. Will join you in recommending it to others.
