K is for Knitting

O-K...it's time for the letter K!

I took up the art of knitting nearly ten years ago and haven't regretted it at all.  One day a friend decided that she wanted to learn the wonderful art of knitting, so we took a day long class at a local craft store and a new passion was born!  Since learning, I've further cemented the idea that I'm an "old lady" in the minds of nearly everyone I come into contact with.  Honestly, I'm okay with that :)  I remember trying to learn how to crochet as a child and never caught on (my brother was quite good at it, though I doubt he could crochet a chain today), but for some reason knitting came much easier.  I recently tried to crochet again...(k)abysmal, (k)atrocious, (k)asymmetrical outcomes.  Over the past few years, though, I've had opportunities to teach people how to knit, which is always fun.  The most commonly used method of knitting in the English-speaking world is English-knitting where you throw the yarn around the needles.  This is what I do (though it makes purling more difficult).  However, for some odd reason everyone I've taught to knit practices the Continental method where you pick the yarn with your needle.  I have absolutely no idea how this happened, because I can't knit that way, but there you have it.  Regardless of my lack-luster knitting skills when it comes to teaching, I find the actual act of knitting incredibly calming and therapeutic.  One thing that is discouraging:  having my hands ache after a long knitting session when I haven't knitted in a while (I tend to lose track of time).

    I wish I didn't have little stubby sausage fingers. I can't seem to do relaxing things like knit because these meat hands get in the way!

    That's how I feel about cross-stitch... I love the feel of it in my hands. I've tried knitted, but I'm just not that good at it.

    My mom taught me to knit a few years ago, and I did it for a while. You're right. It's very relaxing, and I wish I had more time for it!

Oooo...the day is getting closer; creeping stealthily, it will smack you in the face in no time! L is for...Lighthouses

 It's a schizophrenic Saturday here in Oregon (what's new) and we're strolling in to the halfway point of the A-Z Blogging Challenge.  Today's letter brings us to a feature that many states along the coast possess and something that I've always had a fascination with... Lighthouses There are eleven total lighthouses along the Oregon Coast.  Nine were built for maritime purposes, five are still in operation, and two were privately built.  Of the eleven, nine of them are on the National Register of Historic Places.  There are five lighthouses that offer tours to visitors and each has a unique history.  Some even have sordid pasts and rumored ghosts that roam their buildings.  As a heads up, I apologize for the length of this post. C is for...Crater Lake

Nearly halfway through the first week of the A-Z Challenge and we are to the letter C.  I hope everyone is plugging along nicely and not feeling pressured yet!  Today's letter is representative of... Crater Lake I love Crater Lake .  It's beautiful, fascinating, and awesome.  Located in Southern Oregon, Crater Lake is a body of water that has formed inside the remains of a once active volcano in the Cascade Range.  The caldera formed by the massive eruption of Mount Mazama 7700 years ago is now filled with crystal clear blue water and two islands; the main one being Wizard Island.  Fed only by rainfall and melting snow, the water is completely replaced every 250 years and one of the purest bodies of water in America in terms of absent pollutants.  The park is open year-round and visited by nearly half a million people annually, but many roads become impassible during the winter months.
