Why I Love...Interesting Book Covers

I'm finally getting in to the groove of things and have found time to post something for Why I Love Wednesday.  This excites me greatly because I feel like I've been such a slacker in participating.  Not my normal self at all :(  Anyway, today's Why I Love concerns something that, ironically, I was talking about with a book rep about today:  Book Covers.  While I try not to "judge a book by its cover", there are times when I am draw to something simply because I find the cover intriguing or shocking or pleasant.  And when that happens, I have to read the book!  Here are some of my favorites:

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs
I remember the first times I saw this cover and I immediately wanted to know what it was about.  It looked so haunting.  The levitating girl gazes at you in a really penetrating way, it's almost as if you can't look away.  What if you miss something?  What if something crazy happens?  It really makes you want to find out what is going on.  Great cover!






The Sisters Brothers by Patrick DeWitt
 Though perhaps not a haunting as Miss Peregrine's, DeWitt's The Sisters Brothers presents something eerie in a different way.  There is almost an optical illusion that's happening on this cover.  It can be viewed as two brothers, the Sisters, standing in front of a full moon pointing guns at the reader.  Or it can be seen as a skull with red eyes.  Hm...I think I like the idea of the two brothers.  Either way it's intriguing and something that you ponder.





Bossypants by Tina Fey
 I love the cover of Tina Fey's Bossypants because it makes me laugh.  I mean, look at those massive man arms!!!  Seriously!  It's so funny and it does reflect the content of the book.  Hilarious cover for a hilarious woman. 








As much as we desperately try not to judge books by their covers, I think that when it comes to an actual book it's okay to do so (to a certain extent).  These covers are some of my favorite from the past year, though I'm sure if I really thought about it I could come up with so many more.

    I read the sample chapters of The Sisters Brothers, but it didn't hook me... then again, westerns aren't exactly my forte. In fact, the last couple years, just about everything that isn't Fantasy has not interested me much... not that I haven't been trying different things. It's just where I'm at for now in my life, I suppose...

    As for covers, I have to admit that I'm swayed quite heavily by a book's cover... I try not to, but I am...

    I've read all of the Sisters Brothers. It is a great cover but I found the book tailed off slightly towards the very end.

    I like the first cover too, though the Tina Fey one freaks me out a bit!

    I do think e-book covers have to work hard too. They have to make an immediate impact in a space that's only about the size of a postage stamp.

    I love book covers. I haven't read those books and I wish I lived in a town with a bookstore so I could just casually keep up with things. And peruse covers. Sometimes in class I will put up all the different versions of book covers for whatever work we are studying and I think it is useful to have something the students can tangibly see, the packaging of the content they are studying.

Oooo...the day is getting closer; creeping stealthily, it will smack you in the face in no time! L is for...Lighthouses

 It's a schizophrenic Saturday here in Oregon (what's new) and we're strolling in to the halfway point of the A-Z Blogging Challenge.  Today's letter brings us to a feature that many states along the coast possess and something that I've always had a fascination with... Lighthouses There are eleven total lighthouses along the Oregon Coast.  Nine were built for maritime purposes, five are still in operation, and two were privately built.  Of the eleven, nine of them are on the National Register of Historic Places.  There are five lighthouses that offer tours to visitors and each has a unique history.  Some even have sordid pasts and rumored ghosts that roam their buildings.  As a heads up, I apologize for the length of this post. C is for...Crater Lake

Nearly halfway through the first week of the A-Z Challenge and we are to the letter C.  I hope everyone is plugging along nicely and not feeling pressured yet!  Today's letter is representative of... Crater Lake I love Crater Lake .  It's beautiful, fascinating, and awesome.  Located in Southern Oregon, Crater Lake is a body of water that has formed inside the remains of a once active volcano in the Cascade Range.  The caldera formed by the massive eruption of Mount Mazama 7700 years ago is now filled with crystal clear blue water and two islands; the main one being Wizard Island.  Fed only by rainfall and melting snow, the water is completely replaced every 250 years and one of the purest bodies of water in America in terms of absent pollutants.  The park is open year-round and visited by nearly half a million people annually, but many roads become impassible during the winter months.
